A number --> bermakna 'sejumlah/sekumpulan/banyak'
                ---> sinonim dengan a lot of 
                ---> sama dengan a lot of, a number berbentuk JAMAK. 

Contoh: 

• A number of students were late for class.
• A number of students are absent today.
• A number of planes were delayed due to the snowstorm in Makassar.

The number --> bermakna 'jumlah'

                ---> berbentuk TUNGGAL
Contoh:

• The number of students in the class is fifteen.
• The number of employees in my company is approximately ten thousands.
• The number of passengers affected by the delays was great.
